Over the last couple of months as I drove past all of the farms that line I-88 on the way to DeKalb, I noticed one farmer that had big huge trailer dump trucks dropping off huge piles of soil in the middle of his field. Over a two week period there was enough dirt to fill two or three large houses. I thought it was very odd, and probably very expensive, but it didn't hit me until today what it is for. It is a sod farm. When they cut up the sod into nice little patches and roll them up, they take a good amount of the underlying soil, so periodically they have to replenish what they take away.
