I needed to ship our defective GPS receiver back to the reseller and I wanted to have it insured for its value of $3,000. Our admin checked with the US Postal Service and the insurance alone would cost about $60. Wow. A lot, but it still makes business sense because it would cost less than my time and mileage to drive it there.

She called FedEx just to see how much they would charge, even though we expected it to be more. They don't have optional insurance, but as long as we enter a declared value on the shipping form they will reimburse for the full amount of the loss after an investigation. Their total cost: about $3.
